Canary Island Date palm (Phoenix canariensis) care tips & plant information
Care tips
- Position: Full sun.
- Watering: Water regularly during growing season. Date palms love a lot of water in the summer. There is normally no need to water Date palms during the winter, only make sure the root ball does not dry out. Protect from excess water during the winter period by covering the plant or pot. Date palms do not like cold wet soil during the winter.
- Hardiness: Less hardy than Chusan palms and Chamaerops palms but can be kept outdoors during winter in milder areas such as London. Protect from cold drying winds and hard frost (below -5°C). Mature Canary Island Date palms can withstand lower temperatures but frost damage may occur. Remove brown leaves from frost damaged trees in spring and they normally recover quickly with new growth from the trunk.
- Pruning: Remove lower leaves as they become brown or tatty. Cut close to the trunk.
- Soil: Well-drained. Fertile. Repot every two to three years.
- Fertilisers: Feed regularly during growing season with Palm fertiliser. There is no need for fertiliser during the winter period.
