Fig tree, Brown Turkey (Ficus carica) care tips & more about this plant

    Care tips

  • Position: Full sun. Preferably grow against a south or south-west facing wall.
  • Water: Water regularly during growing season. Do not overwater. Water less during winter, only make sure the root ball does not dry out totally.
  • Hardiness: Fully hardy.
  • Pruning: Prune into shape in spring but mind that the first crop is borne on last season's growth.
  • Soil: Well-drained. Fertile. Repot every two to three years.
  • Fertilisers: Feed regularly during growing season with fertiliser. There is no need for fertiliser during the winter period.

    More about Fig trees

  • Foliage: Deciduous. Large lobed leaves.
  • Flowers: All flowers inside the fig fruit.
  • Fruit: Purple-brown edible fig. Delicious when ripe. Restricted roots give more fruit, perfect for container cultivation. The fig tree bears two crops but only the first will ripen outdoors in the UK. The first crop, on last season's growth, is called breba. The second crop is borne on the current season's growth.
  • Origin: The fig is believed to be the oldest cultivated fruit crop. It was grown in Jordan River Valley close to Jericho more then 11,000 years ago.
  • Award of Garden Merit (AGM): This award indicates that the plant is recommended by The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS).
